Non-residential information

We are looking forward very much to welcoming you to the Richard Michael Jazz Summer Course in June/July. Please note that the balance of fees is due no later than 31st May. The standard balance is £330 for non-residential participants, assuming that you have paid a deposit of £90. If you are claiming an early bird, group or family discount, and are not sure of the balance due, or have any other query or concern about payment, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Details of how to pay are on the Fees page of this website.

As previously advised, the level of group discount will be based on the number of bookings received by Friday 24th May 2024, since we need to calculate and advise the balance due to be paid by 31st May 2024. Members of a group signing up for the course after 24th May will be eligible for the agreed level of discount as at this date, but the discount cannot be increased from small to large group status (from 5% to 10%) thereafter.

The course venue is Strathallan School in Forgandenny, about eight miles from Perth, Scotland. The full address is below:

Travel information is available on the school website. There is ample parking on site – please ask us for a parking permit on arrival if you are keeping your vehicle on the campus for the duration of the course.

There is no electric vehicle charging point at Strathallan School. There is one at the Tesco Superstore, Edinburgh Road, Perth, PH2 8DX, which is about 6 miles away.

Please note that the Scottish Game Fair at Scone Palace usually coincides with our arrival, but this year it begins on 5th July, our final day. So if you are heading north of Perth on your way home, traffic may be heavier than usual in that area.

When you arrive, please come all the way up the school drive and follow the jazz course signs round to the right beyond the main house to find the car park and registration. Registration for non-residential participants will take place from 6.15 pm to 6.45 pm on Sunday 30th June and from 8.30 am to 9.15 am on Monday 1st July for those who are not able to join us on the Sunday evening. Please let us know if you will be registering on Monday. We would be grateful if you could try to arrive during those times, but if you are not able to do so, please email as soon as possible and let us know your estimated time of arrival.  If you are delayed on your way to the course, please call us on 07592 374745.

There will be a fire drill on Sunday evening at 7 pm, followed by our welcome and introduction session from 7.15 pm until 8.30 pm with Richard and the rest of the tutor team. Course participants will not be playing on the Sunday evening.

There will be four houseparents in residence throughout the course who are there to ensure the safety and welfare of all the course participants.  All houseparents are registered with Disclosure Scotland.  At least three qualified first aiders will be on site throughout the course.

If you would like to arrive a little earlier on the Sunday and have dinner at the school before the introductory session at 7.00 pm, please let us know no later than Monday 24th June so that we can arrange this with the catering team. Similarly, you are welcome to stay for dinner on other evenings if you wish to, especially if you are planning to join in with informal jam session in the evening. Please give us at least 24 hours’ notice for Monday to Thursday dinners. There will be a additional charge of approximately £14 per evening meal – exact cost to be confirmed.

There will be three houseparents in residence throughout the course who are there to ensure the safety and welfare of all the course participants.  All houseparents have been disclosed by Disclosure Scotland.  Any student under 18 years of age who wishes to go off site may only do so if accompanied by one of the houseparents. At least two qualified first aiders will be on site throughout the course.

We can be contacted by mobile phone (07719 985700 or 07592 374745) throughout the course, so please do pass this number on to any friends or relatives who may require it in an emergency.  If they call and there is no answer, please ask them to leave a message and we will get back to them as soon as possible. Additional contact information for course participants will be provided in the course handbook which you will receive at registration.

If you have any specific dietary. medical or other requirements which you did not specify on your original booking form, please let us know immediately so that we can pass that information on to the school and put any necessary arrangements in place.

The course timetable is available on our website.  The teaching sessions will run from 9.30 am until 5.00 pm on Monday to Thursday, and from 9.30 am to approximately 1 pm on Friday, followed by an informal concert beginning at 2 pm to which friends and family are warmly invited. This should finish by 4.15 pm at the latest.  There is no formal teaching in the evenings, but students are encouraged to form combos of their own if they would like to continue playing (until 9.30 pm). Non-residential participants must be off site no later than 10 pm.

If you are collecting a non-residential participant who is under 18 years of age, please advise a houseparent or text 07719 985700 (Kenny) or 07592 374745 (Ruth) when you have picked them up each day, so we know they are away safely.

Please would all players bring their own instruments (and instrument stands/amps where appropriate) – this includes pianists/keyboard players and drummers where possible.  If you are not able to bring your own instrument, please let us know immediately so that we can try to make alternative arrangements.  Music stands will be provided.

WiFi is available in the residences and in most other areas of the school. Details of the WiFi login will be provided on arrival.

Please do not bring any unnecessary valuables with you.  Personal items and instruments will not be covered under the venue’s insurance, so please make sure that you have your own cover in place against loss or damage.

There is a swimming pool on site which will be available to us several times during the week.  Please bring your own towel. Tennis courts are also available for us to use – please bring your own tennis equipment if you want to play. The campus also boasts a nine-hole golf course, so do bring your own clubs etc if you fancy a round!
