Participants’ Agreement

Richard Michael Jazz Summer Course

Participants agreement

All attendees

Participants of all ages will

Adhere to the highest standards of behaviour, mindful of the wide age range of participants, and always use appropriate language and tone.

Take part in registration roll calls to ensure smooth running of course safeguarding procedures.

Treat venue facilities and staff with respect.

Be at programmed sessions on time and with any equipment set up and ready to go  –  we have a packed programme and delays to start times mean less time for music!

Work with tutors and pastoral staff to foster a positive atmosphere in classes and jam sessions.

Refrain from smoking/vaping in the buildings or grounds: Strathallan school is a no-smoking campus.

Any participant found to be not adhering to the participant agreement, or acting in such a way that disrupts any class or activity, may be required to withdraw from the course with immediate effect.

Adult Participants

Over-18 residents will be accommodated in a separate boarding house from under-18s, in single rooms with shared bathroom facilities. No adult participant should be in the residential areas of the under-18s boarding house at any time.

Common areas are available for socialising in the boarding house after classes have finished and attendees are expected to keep these areas clean and tidy as well as showing consideration for those who may wish to sleep.

Non-resident participants should arrive by 9.15am, and classes will be finished at 5pm, Monday to Thursday. On Friday the course will finish at approximately 4pm.  Lunch is provided.  If you would like to stay for dinner this can be arranged: please inform the administrator, giving at least 24 hours notice.

While the pastoral staff are primarily here for everyone’s safety, we are all responsible for each other’s welfare.  Please report anything which concerns you to the team.

U18 Participants

Under-18 residents will be accommodated in a dedicated boarding house divided into boys’ and girls’ wings, supervised by pastoral staff with a minimum ratio of at 1 to 10.  Under 18s should not be in the adult boarding house unless accompanied by their own parent/named carer or a member of pastoral staff.

The boarding house will be run in a similar manner to school residential trips and similar behaviour standards apply:

  • No alcohol
  • No recreational drugs
  • No sexual activity

Participants are expected to follow directions of pastoral staff at all times, including evening sign in/out procedures, which will be explained on the course.

If a child needs to go offsite they may only do so accompanied by a member of pastoral staff or by a nominated adult, in each case subject to prior written confirmation having been received from their parent/named carer.

Non-resident under-18 participants should be dropped off at the venue by 9.15am and collected no later than 5.45pm, Monday to Thursday. On Friday the course will finish at approximately 4pm.  Please ensure that your child has signed in and out with staff each day. Lunch is provided.  If you would like to stay for dinner this can be arranged: please inform the administrator, giving at least 24 hours notice.

The pastoral staff are here for your well-being. Speak to a member of the team if anything makes you feel uncomfortable or unsafe.

Tutors

The course tutors will

  • Treat all participants and staff with kindness and patience in order to foster a positive atmosphere in classes and on the course in general.
  • Communicate requests for assistance as soon as possible.
  • Avoid unnecessary physical contact with participants. Appropriate (i.e. learning-specific) touch is permitted but only with the participant’s permission.
  • Be available to listen to participants’ concerns or to refer participants to the correct person.

Everyone!

Buy into the Richard Michael philosophy that “mistakes are cool”.  If you are prepared just to have a go, we guarantee you’ll have a great time.
